SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento Sports Commission, a division of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB), in partnership with Sacramento Republic FC, is pleased to announce USA Men’s Rugby will be matching up against the Canadian Rugby team June 21, 2014, in Sacramento, Calif. The match will take place at the new Cal Expo Multi-Use Sports Field and broadcast nationally on NBC Universal with a 3:00 P.M. PT start.
“We are excited that a match of this caliber will take place at the new stadium at Cal Expo, especially since rugby has long been part of Sacramento’s sports history,” said Mike Sophia, Director of the Sacramento Sports Commission. “Even better, this highly followed international match-up holds broad spectator appeal and also offers us the opportunity to showcase our beautiful city.”
Although rugby is played at many levels in the Sacramento region, this is the first time the Men’s Eagles will compete on a local pitch. The Eagles are currently ranked 18th in the world and have a fierce rivalry with Canada, currently ranked 15th.
"The northern California region is a rugby hotbed and we're excited to have the Eagles play here in Sacramento," USA Rugby Events Director Jen Gray said. "The area has produced Eagles like Eric Fry, Blaine Scully and Louis Stanfill, with a number of others in the pipeline. The support from the Sacramento rugby community, along with support from our partners at the Republic and Sacramento Sports Commission, will ensure us a large turnout to help cheer on the Eagles.”
Tickets will go on sale to the general public April 15. For more information about the match taking place June 21, please visit http://usvcanadarugbymatch.com/.
